Saving and loading the Quick Access Toolbar

The Quick Access Toolbar allows you to access your most frequently used buttons, but unfortunately Office 2007 has no built-in feature for saving or loading the Quick Access Toolbar.

Below is a technique for manually saving the QAT so it can be loaded onto other computers or backed up.

First, close all Microsoft Office programs, including Outlook.

If you are using Windows XP, navigate to this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\<User Name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Office

If you are using Windows Vista, navigate to this folder:
C:\Users\<User Name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office

The Quick Access Toolbar settings files are stored in this folder with the extension .qat and are named after the program they were created in, for example word.qat or excel.qat or powerpoint.qat etc.

To backup these Quick Access Toolbar files, simply copy them and paste them to a safe location such as a USB stick or external hard drive.

The files can be copied to the same location on any computer with Office 2007 installed and the Quick Access Toolbar settings will be automatically used by Office 2007 when the program is next used.

Note that Office 2007 will not generate a .qat file unless the default Quick Access Toolbar has been modified and you can return to using the default Quick Access Toolbar by deleting these files.

Also note you should always backup the data on your computer and any files you are working with before modifying system files.
